An unmentioned episode in the history of the Lodge of the Gray
Squirrel (see The Book of Chantries) concerns a mage named Mary
Tomesha, an Orphan of Mohave (Mojave) and Anglo descent. In 1960, the Chantry recruited Tomesha from the Colorado River Reservation in Arizona. Though she took to her studies well, Tomesha seemed withdrawn and homesick. No one knows when she slipped into Quiet, but one day three years later, every member of the lodge imperceptibly began speaking the Mohave language, Yuman. They understood one another perfectly; no one realized the change until they emerged from the Horizon Realm and found outsiders unintelligible. Investigating, they found that Mary Tomesha believed she had returned home. If she had developed greater skill in the Sphere of Matter, she would have transformed the Lodge into a copy of the reservation. Chantry leader Tom Smithson ("Laughing Eagle") confined Tomesha in a pastoral region of the Horizon Realm. Some years later, Tomesha vanished, and her whereabouts are unknown. [The number of successes determines the duration and scope of the Effect— in most cases, one person per success. In the absence of obvious evidence, those affected by the rote receive a Wits + Awareness roll {difficulty 8) to realize that they ace speaking a different language.] |
