Banish Elemental

(• • Forces, • • Spirit)                                                                                   Hidden Lore 17

For all their command of natural forces, Hermetic mages have a skittish relationship with elemental spirits.  Dreamspeakers and some Verbena maintain respectful (if no relaxed) friendships with these volatile beings, but the Order's attitude toward many spirits ranges between hostility and contempt.

Cardinal Nunzio Blanco, a delegate to the Vatican under Pope Gregory XIII, devised this rote in 1576. Controversy erupted in later centuries when the Order debated adding Nunzio to its White Roster of Celebrants. Some mages argued that Nunzio had created this spell at the forerunner of the Technocracy.  Intense maneuvering led to Nunzio's addition and to the "accidental" destruction of all evidence that would settle the question.

[This is a vulgar Effect; each success rolled inflicts a Health Level of aggravated damage on an elemental spirit (if it's Materialized), or subtracts two points of its Power (if it's in the Umbra). This rote does not work at all on other kinds of Umbrood.]
