Experience Substance

( • • Mind, • Matter)                                                                                  Hidden Lore  17

Attribution, of this medieval rote remains in dispute.  Moderates in the Order of Hermes suggest that all of the many claimants developed it independently.  The matter has waited in the Pending file of the Attribution Committee's Dispute Adjudication Subcommittee for six centuries.

By rubbing a medicine, drug or chemical between her fingers, a Hermetic mage mentally experiences its effect.  Hallucinogens inspire visions, while narcotics produce sleepiness and reduce pain, and so on.  Medicines such as purgatives and diuretics produce only mental sensations,  not the physical effects themselves.  The mage remains in control, and can always stop the experience without harm, addiction or physical effects.

Cultists of Ecstasy sneer at this rote, for it produces only a pale simulation of the substance's reality. Its control is the antithesis of Cult doctrine. A Manhattan Cultist named Just Larry has modified this rote to amplify a substance's effects when actually ingested. He will presumably report results when he emerges from his coma in Bellevue Hospital.

[For dangerous substances such as acids, the Effect works when the mage touches the substance's container.]
